Foster care is care for children outside the home that substitutes for parental care. The child may be placed with a family, relatives or strangers, in a group home (where up to a dozen foster children live under the continuous supervision of a parental figure), or in an institution (McDonald).
Definition: Foster care is defined as care for delinquents or neglected children usually in an institution or substitute home. Children in our foster care system receive long lasting effects of abuse and neglect but in some cases the foster care system has been proven to minimize the negative results of inappropriate use of child care.
Foster care is when a child is temporarily placed with another family. This child may have been abused, neglected, or may be a child who is dependent and can survive on their own but needs a place to stay. Normally the child parents are sick, alcohol or drug abusers, or may even be homeless themselves.
Family units that have become separated due to family or behavior problems often contribute to delays in these areas. In order to promote continuity in the social, emotional, and developmental growth of children who have been victims of family disruption, children are often removed from the home and placed in foster care.
There are too many foster parents. Despite Federal law (Adoption Safety Family Law (ASFA) and other legislation directives) aimed at reducing the number of children taking care, the Department of Health and Human Services (2010) said that 285,000 children People who showed withdrawing from 2008, only 52% will see themselves again with their parents and primary carers.
Foster care is the temporary placement of a child outside of the home of the natural parents.
Foster care is the raising and supervision of children in a private home, group home, or institution, by individuals engaged and paid by a social service agency (Legal Dictionary, 2016). Care givers can be of kin relationship to the child, or may not know the child at all.
Positive and negative effects of foster care There is no denying in the fact that homeless kids with as well as without foster homes face adverse situations in their life. Like two sides of a coin, there are two sides to the case in which kids are sent to foster care.
The Foster Care System in the United States aims to protect and take care of children who, for different reasons, can not live with their natural families. The tragedy of homelessness is possibly one of the most traumatic experiences that a child can face, comparable only to that of being orphaned.
Relative foster care, also known as Kinship care is defined as “the full-time nurturing and protection of children who must be separated from their parents, by relatives, members of their tribes or clans, godparents, stepparents, or other adults who have a kinship bond with a child” (Winokur, et al., 2009, p. 8).
Even though the traditional family is changing, one opponent stands to challenge the picture-perfect family: foster care. The concept of placing a child who has suffered from abuse or neglect is not new.
Family is supposed to “provide the kind of care and nurture that is essential to well-being” (Bartholet, 1). In the foster care system this isn’t usually the case with some foster families. The families get paid a set rate every month to take care of the child or children in their homes.
The children in foster care are subjected to some kind of social exclusion, particularly from their family. This exclusion results in a decrease in the level of attachment with their family members, particularly with their mothers. This causes serious damage to their mental health.
